Eco-Friendly Travel: Our Hybrid Fleet in Istanbul

Istanbul's traffic is infamous for a reason. The city's geography — water on three sides, two continents, fifteen million daily commuters — creates conditions that challenge any internal combustion engine. Stop-and-go driving burns fuel at the worst possible rate and generates heat. A hybrid drivetrain is not just an environmental choice in this context; it is a practical engineering solution to a specific problem.

How a Self-Charging Hybrid Works

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid in our fleet uses a parallel hybrid system: a conventional 1.8-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a battery pack. Unlike plug-in hybrids, it requires no external charging — the battery is replenished through regenerative braking (capturing energy when you slow down) and through the petrol engine running the generator.

In Istanbul traffic, this combination has a specific advantage: every time you brake, energy that would otherwise be lost as heat is converted back into battery charge. The more stop-and-go driving you do, the better the system's efficiency — the opposite of what happens with a conventional engine. A standard petrol car returns its worst fuel economy in city traffic; the Corolla Hybrid returns its best.

Real-world fuel consumption in central Istanbul traffic: approximately 4.5–5.5 litres per 100 km. A comparable non-hybrid petrol car in the same conditions: 8–10 litres per 100 km. Over a week of city driving, this difference is meaningful.

The Noise Difference

A secondary benefit customers frequently mention: the car is quieter. At low speeds and when stationary, the Corolla Hybrid runs on electric power alone. In a city where ambient noise is already high, this creates a calmer driving experience, particularly in tunnel sections and narrow streets.

Carbon Footprint

The average hybrid vehicle produces approximately 20–30% fewer CO₂ emissions than a conventional petrol equivalent in urban driving. For travellers with environmental commitments, renting hybrid is a straightforward way to reduce the climate impact of their transportation while in Istanbul. We are progressively increasing the proportion of hybrid models in our Istanbul fleet.

When Hybrid Is the Right Choice

Hybrid advantage is maximised in urban and suburban driving with frequent stopping. It is the correct choice for:

  • City sightseeing (Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu, Kadıköy)
  • Airport transfers
  • Heavy traffic commuting on the TEM or E-5

The efficiency advantage diminishes on motorways. At constant speeds above 80 km/h, the electric motor contributes less. If your rental will be 90% highway driving, a modern efficient diesel may achieve similar real-world economy. For mixed driving — city plus highway — the hybrid almost always wins on total fuel cost.

Practical Notes

If you haven't driven a hybrid before, the first few minutes feel slightly unusual — particularly the transition from electric to petrol mode. Within fifteen minutes it becomes entirely natural. Our handover team explains the gear selector (which returns to centre rather than staying in a physical Drive position) and the power/charge dashboard display.

Fuel: standard unleaded petrol (95 or 98 RON), available at every Turkish fuel station. No special fuel required.

When requesting a quote, specify that you want a hybrid vehicle. We will confirm availability for your dates. Hybrid models at Auris rent at the same daily rate as the equivalent non-hybrid vehicle in the same category — no premium for choosing the more fuel-efficient option.
