Car rental insurance is the most misunderstood part of any rental agreement — and in the Middle East, where conditions, legal frameworks, and road realities differ from Western norms, getting this right matters even more. This guide demystifies every insurance product you'll encounter at the rental desk.
CDW — Collision Damage Waiver
CDW is the foundational protection in any rental agreement. It limits your financial liability in case of an accident involving the rental vehicle. Without CDW, you could be responsible for the full repair cost of the car — which on a premium vehicle can reach thousands of dollars. With CDW, your liability is capped at an excess (deductible) amount, typically ranging from $300 to $1,500 depending on the vehicle category.
At Auris, CDW is included as standard in every rental rate. We do not offer it as an upsell — it's simply part of the deal. The excess amount is clearly stated in your rental agreement before you sign.
Super CDW — Is It Worth It?
Super CDW (also called Full Protection or Zero Excess) reduces your excess to zero, meaning you pay nothing out of pocket in a covered accident. This product costs extra — typically $10 to $25 per day. Whether it's worth it depends on your trip: if you're driving in dense city traffic, on unfamiliar roads, or in winter conditions, the peace of mind often justifies the cost. For experienced drivers on a short leisure trip, standard CDW is usually sufficient.
Theft Protection
Standard CDW covers collision damage but often excludes theft. If a rental car is stolen and you lack theft protection, you may be liable for the vehicle's full value. In Syria and Turkey, our fleet is insured against theft as standard — verify this is included in your agreement before driving away.
What CDW Does NOT Cover
Important exclusions across most CDW policies: damage to tyres, wheels, windscreen, and underbody is frequently excluded from standard CDW — each may require a separate protection add-on. Interior damage, damage caused while driving under the influence, and damage resulting from violation of the rental agreement (such as crossing borders without authorisation) are universally excluded.
At Auris, we clearly explain every exclusion at the time of booking — not at pickup when you're in a hurry.
Your Credit Card's Coverage
Many premium Visa and Mastercard credit cards offer Collision Damage Waiver as a benefit when you pay for the full rental with that card. This can effectively duplicate your CDW — allowing you to decline the rental company's version and save money. However, credit card CDW often has significant exclusions: luxury vehicles, SUVs over a certain value, Syria and some other countries may be excluded from coverage. Read the fine print of your card's benefit guide carefully before relying on it.
Insurance in Syria vs Turkey
Turkey operates under a well-developed insurance framework. All vehicles on Turkish roads are required to carry third-party liability insurance (Traffic Insurance / Trafik Sigortası). At Auris Turkey, our vehicles carry both mandatory third-party and comprehensive collision coverage.
Syria's insurance environment requires careful attention. Auris Syria vehicles carry locally-valid comprehensive insurance covering collision, third-party liability, and theft. Our documents are accepted at all Syrian checkpoints. If you're entering Syria from Turkey, note that Turkish insurance is not valid in Syria — our cross-border arrangements handle this correctly.
The Bottom Line
Never rent a car — in Turkey, Syria, or anywhere — without understanding exactly what insurance coverage is in place. At Auris, we remove the confusion: our pricing is transparent, our inclusions are clear, and we take the time to explain your coverage before you drive. Contact our team with any insurance questions before your booking is confirmed.
