Istanbul is the only city in the world that straddles two continents, and its airport infrastructure reflects that: two full international hubs serving different parts of the city and carrying airlines at different price points. Choosing where you land — or understanding which airport your itinerary routes you through — significantly affects your car rental experience.
Istanbul Airport (IST): The Giant on the European Side
Istanbul Airport opened in 2019 and quickly became one of the three busiest airports in Europe by passenger volume. It sits in Arnavutköy, roughly 40 km northwest of the city centre on the European side. The complex is enormous — walking between gates can take 15–20 minutes — and the arrivals hall is correspondingly large.
If you are staying anywhere on the European side — Taksim, Beyoğlu, Şişli, Fatih, Sultanahmet — IST is the right airport. The complication: exiting IST during peak hours (7–10am, 4–8pm weekdays) can add an hour to what should be a 40-minute drive.
Auris service at IST: our team meets you at the arrivals exit with the vehicle ready and documents prepared. Contact us when your flight lands and we meet you at the point you specify — no queuing at a rental counter.
Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW): The Asian Side Alternative
SAW sits in Pendik, on the far eastern edge of Istanbul's Asian side. It is the primary base for low-cost carriers — Pegasus Airlines operates extensively from here. In terms of experience, SAW is considerably smaller and more navigable than IST: baggage claim clears faster, immigration lines are generally shorter, and the walk from arrivals to the kerb is five minutes rather than twenty.
If your plan involves the European side, you will use one of Istanbul's two Bosphorus bridges or the Eurasia Tunnel. Factor in bridge toll costs (all Auris vehicles are HGS-equipped, so no manual payment) and 60–90 minutes of additional driving time under normal traffic.
For travellers whose Istanbul itinerary includes Asian-side destinations — Kadıköy, Üsküdar, or driving directly east toward Ankara — SAW is the more convenient choice.
Auris office at SAW: our branch is eight minutes by car from the terminal exit. We coordinate timing with your flight arrival so your car is waiting when you need it.
Which Airport for a Road Trip?
If you are using Istanbul as a starting point for a road trip heading south toward the Aegean, the O-3 motorway from IST gives very direct access. For travel east toward Ankara and Central Anatolia, SAW points you in the right direction from the start.
Practical Recommendations
- Flying with young children? SAW's shorter transit from gate to car is meaningfully less stressful.
- Business trip, need to be in Levent or Şişli quickly? IST is better positioned.
- Arriving late at night? Both airports operate 24 hours; contact us with your arrival time and we will have the car ready.
Our WhatsApp contact is the fastest way to coordinate collection details regardless of which airport you are using.
